Minor League Recap (Final Week)

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Season Ends- Duncan MVP, Jackson ROY

The final week of the season was successful for the SWB Yanks, after sending up their top players to the MLB. They finished with an 81-60 record, winning the INT North, and will take on the wild card winning Gwinnett Braves, who were 81-63.

Shelley Duncan won International League MVP for the first time.
Final Stat line: .277 AVG 30 HR (LL) 99 RBI (LL) .370 OBP .546 SLG 2 SB 85 R (LL)

Austin Jackson won the IL Rookie of the Year. The 22-year-old lived up to his title of best Yankee prospect.

LL= League Leader

The Yankees will have home field advantage, starting away at Gwinnett on 9/9.

Minor League Recap (8/27-8/31)

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees had a strong week to improve their lead in the division to 3.5 games as the season begins to wind down.

(8/27) Romulo Sanchez probably threw his best game of the season on Wednesday. Sanchez went 7 innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 9. Juan Miranda provided the offense for the game with his 2-run (78) home run (19) in the fourth to lift the Yanks to a 2-1 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs. Zach Kroenke pitched an inning in relief, allowing a run (unearned) and Jon Albaladejo recorded his 10th save.

(8/28) The game was postponed due to rain against the Pawtucket Red Sox; rescheduled for the following night.

(8/29 [day]) The Yankees, behind Josh Towers, shut out the Red Sox in the day portion of the doubleheader. Towers went 6 innings, allowing just 4 hits and striking out 3. Mark Melancon went 2 scoreless, and Jon Albaladejo saved his 11th. Kevin Russo hit a solo home run (4) (25) in the 4th. Juan Miranda drove in RBI number 79, while Chris Stewart drove in number 16. The Yankees won 3-0. (There was a 2:19 rain delay during the game.

(8/29 [night]) The game was postponed due to rain, and was a makeup for the night before. The game for 8/28 was now moved to 8/30.

(8/30 [day]) The Yankees lost the day portion to the PawSox 5-3 on Saturday in a 7-inning game. Ivan Nova continued to show struggles as a starter, going just 4 innings and getting roughed up for 8 hits and 5 earned, falling to 1-4. Shelley Duncan hit home run 28 (88) and Yurendell de Caster hit number 5 (21). Kevin Russo also drove in RBI number 26. Amaury Sanit and Anthony Claggett combined for 3 scoreless innings in relief.

(8/30 [night]) Shelley Duncan and the Yankees took the game, and the series against the PawSox in 7 innings. Duncan’s grand slam (29) (92) in the 6th gave the Yankees a lead to hold. Jason Hirsh had another strong outing, going 5.1, allowing 2 hits, 0 earned and fanning 5. Edwar Ramirez went 1.2 to get save number 4.

(8/31) The Yankees took the opener of yet another series against the Syracuse Chiefs on Sunday by a 6-4 final. Kei Igawa got spanked for 11 hits in just 6.1 innings, but only allowed 3 runs (2 earned). Ramiro Pena (9), Francisco Cervelli 2 (7), Colin Curtis (25), and Juan Miranda (81) all drove in Yankee runs in the victory.

Transactions: The Yankees acquired outfielder Freddy Guzman from the Orioles for a player to be named later or cash. Guzman will be sent to AAA.

Performer of the Week: Shelley Duncan (.353 [6-17] 2 HR 5 RBI 1 GS).

Minor League Recap (8/24-8/26)

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (71-57) had a very poor start to the week, losing all three games.

(8/24) The Buffalo Bisons took game three of the series by a score of 7-2. Anthony Claggett dropped to below .500 (6-7) after going 5 inn. allowing 7 hits and 2 earned. Zach Kroenke had another poor outing in relief, giving up 4 hits and 2 earned in 2 inn. Yurendell de Caster had a 2-run single (18) in the loss.

(8/25) The Bisons split the series with the Yankees after shutting them down; 4-0. Ivan Nova pitched a strong 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and just 1 earned. Mark Melancon got rocked in his two innings in relief, allowing 5 hits and 3 earned.

(8/26) SWB lost the opener to the Syracuse Chiefs 4-3. Kei Igawa fell to 9-8 after he went just 4.2 inn. and gave up 8 hits and 2 earned (4 runs). Mike Dunn and Edwar Ramirez pitched well in relief, combining for 5 strikeouts over 4.1. Yurendell de Caster hit home run number 4 (20) and Colin Curtis hit number 6 (24).

Transactions: C Brian Peterson was placed on the 7-day DL.

Performer of the Week: Really no player well deserving. Edwar Ramirez (3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 K) or Mike Dunn (2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 4 K).

The Yankees remain 2.5 games ahead of Syracuse in the division.

Minor League Recap 8/20-8/23

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees reached the 70 win plateau this week, after going 2-2 this half week.

(8/20 [day]) On Thursday, the Yanks split a 7-inning doubleheader with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, taking game one 4-3. Ivan Nova went a strong 6 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 ER. Jonathon Albaladejo blew the save, but got the win in relief. Austin Jackson hit the game-winning single (55) in the bottom of the 7th. Other RBIs were driven in by Shelley Duncan 2 (84) and Yurendell de Caster (16).

(8/20 [night]) The Yankees lost the night portion by a score of 9-4. Kei Igawa got knocked around again, going just 2.1 inn. and allowing 6 hits and 4 earned. Mark Melancon gave up 3 earned over 1.2 innings. On the plus side, Kevin Russo hit home run number 3, and Shelley Duncan hit number 27. RBIs were driven in by Juan Miranda (76), Kevin Russo (24), and Shelley Duncan 2 (86).

(8/21) On Friday, the SWB got roughed up again in a 9-1 loss to the IronPigs. Romulo Sanchez took the loss, going just 4.1 inn., allowing 6 hits and 3 ER. Zach Kroenke gave up 3 earned in 1.1 inn. of relief. The lone RBI was driven in by Reegie Corona (8).

(8/22) On Saturday, the Yankees took the opener against the Buffalo Bisons, shutting them out 1-0. After a 56 minute rain delay, Josh Towers had a very strong outing, going 6 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits while striking out 5. Mark Melancon and Jonathon Albaladejo combined for 3 scoreless, hitless innings. Albaladejo got save number 8. The lone Yankee RBI was driven in by Shelley Duncan (87).

(8/23) On Sunday, the Yanks won game two of the series against the Bisons by a score of 2-1. Jason Hirsh improved to 3-0 as he went 6 innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 earned. Michael Dunn pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Jonathon Albaladejo struck out the side to get save number 9. Austin Jackson’s two-run double (57) in the 3rd inning provided all the Yankee scoring for the game.

Transactions: Ramiro Peña was optioned to SWB, as Damaso Marte was called up to the MLB team. Amaury Sanit, George Kontos, and Doug Bernier were all placed on the 7-day DL, while Romulo Sanchez was activated.

Minor League Recap- 8/16-8/19

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees had a 2-2 week, in which they lost and regained key pitchers.

(8/16) On Sunday, the Yankees lost game three of four to the Durham Bulls by a score of 5-2. Russ Ortiz only allowed 9 hits and 3 earned in just 4 innings. After the game, Ortiz opted out of his contract, ending his Yankee career. Kevin Russo drove in RBI 23 and Chris Stewart drove in number 15.

(8/17) On Monday, the Yankees tied the series against the Bulls with a win; 9-3. Newly activated Josh Towers went 6 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five, improving his record to 5-6. RBIs were driven in by Shelley Duncan (78), Juan Miranda 2 (74), Colin Curtis (22), Austin Jackson 2 (54), and Yurendell de Caster 2 (14).

(8/18) Tuesday, the Yankees took the series opener against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 10-5. Anthony Claggett took the win in 2.1 innings in relief, improving his record to 6-6. Jason Hirsh started, and went four innings allowing 4 hits and 2 earned. Zach Kroenke allowed 4 hits and 2 earned in just 1.2 innings in relief. RBIs were driven in by: Colin Curtis (23), Shelley Duncan 4 (82), Juan Miranda (75), Yurendell de Caster (15), Brian Peterson (3), and Reegie Corona 2 (7). The game had a 1:04 delay.

(8/19) The game was rained out against the IronPigs. No makeup has been announced.

Transactions: Romulo Sanchez and Cody Ransom were placed on the 7-day DL.

AAA Recap of the Week

The International League North division leading Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees had a solid, rain shortened past week.

(8/10) On Monday, young gun Anthony Claggett and the Yanks took the series opener against the Norfolk Tides in a 6-1 victory. Claggett went 5 inn., allowing only 3 hits and 1 ER, lowering his ERA to 2.92. Kevin Russo went yard for the first time this season; giving him RBI number 21. Other RBI’s were driven in by Austin Jackson (48), Chris Stewart 2 (13), and Juan Miranda (67).

(8/11) Newly signed Yankee Russ Ortiz threw a gem in his second outing in a SWB uniform on Tuesday, going 7 innings, one hit and 6 k’s in a 9-0 shutout of the Tides. Kevin Russo hit his second home run in two nights, his only two thus far for the team, along with Cody Ransom hitting his third in AAA. RBI’s were driven in by Reegie Corona (5), Austin Jackson (49), Kevin Russo (22), Juan Miranda 2 (69), Cody Ransom 3 (11), and Chris Stewart (14).

(8/12) Wednesday’s game against Norfolk was postponed due to rain, rescheduled for the following night, and a day/night doubleheader.

(8/13) In the day portion of the doubleheader on Thursday, the Yankees took a rain-shortened 4-2 loss to the Tides in 7 innings. On the plus side, Shelley Duncan hit home run number 26 and drove in RBI number 77, while Yurendell de Caster drove in RBI number 11. Big Rumulo Sanchez took the loss, and Mark Melancon did a great job in 2.2 innings of relief.

(8/13) The night (and makeup) game of the doubleheader was again postponed due to rain. No makeup date has been announced.

(8/14) The Yankees took the series opener against the Durham Bulls on Friday. The team knocked around Andy Sonnanstine, smacking 11 hits and 7 runs off of him. Juan Miranda hit home run number 17. RBI’s were driven in by: Colin Curtis (21), Austin Jackson 3 (52), Cody Ransom (12), Yurendell de Caster (12), John Rodriguez (52), and Juan Miranda 2 (71). The stud Zach Kroenke got the win in relief, going 2.2 inn., with 4 Ks and no hits. He replaced Ivan Nova in the 5th inning, who also got smacked around, giving up 9 hits and 5 ER in 4.1 inn.

(8/15) The Yanks took a loss on Saturday to the Bulls 5-4. Kei Igawa only went 4 innings, allowing 8 hits, 3 ER and 2 home runs. Juan Miranda hit his 18th home run, which is RBI number 72, and John Rodriguez hit his 14th , RBIs 53-55, in the loss.

The lone transaction of the week was Josh Towers being demoted to AAA from the MLB team on Wednesday.
