I just plain don’t get this one.
DeRosa, 35 when the season starts, played with the Cardinals and Indians this past season. He hit .250/.319/.433 with 23 HR and 78 RBI.
DeRosa is asking for a three-year deal worth about $18 Million.
The Yankees won’t sign Johnny Damon to a two year deal worth $20 Million and are looking at DeRosa to be a possible replacement. Wait….didn’t the Yankees just sign Nick Johnson as their DH? Would they trade Melky Cabrera? Trade Gardner? Both? Bench one trade the other?
I just don’t understand why the Yankees would waste $6 Million a year on a 35 year old corner outfielder. By the time his contract is up Colin Curtis, Brett Gardner, and maybe even Jamie Hoffmann will be knocking on the starting OF door.
The Yankees will have Granderson locked in center and MAYBE an opening in right. Do they move DeRosa to the infield? No, the infield is booked.
Why even consider DeRosa? The Yankees need pitching and until they get that, why even look at other free agents?
Right now here is the Yankees lineup and rotation:
1. Jeter SS
2. Johnson DH
3. Teixeira 1B
4. Rodriguez 3B
5. Granderson CF
6. Posada C
7. Cano 2B
8. Swisher RF
9. Cabrera CF
Does anyone else see a problem with the rotation and no problem with the line-up or am I going crazy?
What a season. I am currently speechless and that does not happen very often. Alex Rodriguez has now hit for 100 RBI on the season and 7-YES I MEAN SEVEN RBI in the top of the 6th inning in todays game. First, Rodriguez hit a three-run homer. Next, the Yankees got 2nd and 3rd with two outs for Mark Teixeira. They intentionally walked Teixeira to get to A-Rod. A-Rod then hit a grand slam and now has 100 RBI on the season.
I am going to be honest here. I was not a fan of Rodriguez going into the season. I was one of the people making jokes like “the Yankees should trade A-Rod for Joe Crede” but now I have to issue an apology to him. Rodriguez has been the Yankees MVP this season. Rodrgiuez has been the most valuable player to his team in the AL outside of Joe Mauer in my opinion. Mark Teixeira took off when Rodriguez came back. Rodriguez hit for 100 RBI in less time than most of the players that hit for 80. It is unbelievable that Rodriguez hit for 100 RBI and it just shows how good of a player he is.
Can he do this in the playoffs? I think so. If game two of the ALDS is a night game, I will be there. I was at Game 4 of the 07 ALDS when A-Rod hit a HR. I am very, very interested in seeing how he does in the postseason. I predict in the ALDS he hits .310 with 2 HR and 6 RBI.
Oh-one more note. Yankees fans or any fans that are reading this: please do not boo Alex Rodriguez in the post-season. Don’t boo him. I don’t care if he goes 0-489379537 do not boo him. He relies on the fans and his teammates for support. So please give it to him.
The Yankees made a move today, purchasing the contract of Freddy Guzman and DFA’ing Anthony Claggett. Claggett pitched 2.2 Innings giving up 11 hits and 10 ER. He was infamously known for his performance in the Yankees 22-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians in April.
Guzman will be used mostly for his speed in late game pinch-running situations.
